Science and Scriptures

Getting excited around here for our Afton Joy. This birthday coming up is a very special one for her, 8 years old.

We are going to use our FHEs this month to focus on baptism to support her with this big decision she has made to become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Tonight we used a few things around the house to help us understand the scriptures we read last night as a family - 2nd Nephi 31.

We had a jar full of clear water, which represented Afton Joy. Next we used red food gel coloring (somehow I ran out of liquid, which would have worked better) that represented sins one can make in their life. And last was a medicine syringe full of Clorox Bleach that represented our special "Baptism by Immersion."

They all wanted a turn coming up with sins that Afton may have committed thus far in her life, squirting in a drop of food coloring in the of perfectly clear water. Little by little they could see how "sin" was affecting "Afton."

We talked about how when we're baptized, just like our Savior was, we could be forgiven of our sins and return to our perfect state. The "Baptism of Immersion" was also squirted in by each child, with them seeing the water change little by little back to the clear water it once was.

We then talked about how it would be impossible for Afton to never sin again after her special baptism day. She would make mistakes and hopefully learn and grow from them. And thankfully, the Savior's atonement would allow for Afton to be forgiven of those sins so that she can return to live with our Heavenly Father again.

This was a fun and important family home evening. I love my babes so much and hope they continue to want to have these special blessings that come when we follow our Savior's example.

A Big Difference

My Sugar and I did this same exact hike with my Mom about 10 or so years ago.

And there was a such a big difference from everything we had remembered about this fun 2 mile loop hike, Tahquitz Falls.

1. This time, we had to pay.

2. This time, we went and the brown plants and bushes of before, were shades of lovely green and just about to blossom.

3. This time, we were not about to die from heat stroke because it was a refreshing 67° instead of the summer weather we endured the last time.

4. This time, we had 3 babes with us when before they were just a dream in our hearts.

5. This time, my Sugar was too cool to get in.

6. This time, I was missing my Mom. I missed hearing her complain about her knees and then be proud of herself when she made it all the way up to the waterfall.

This time, it was such a big difference.

"Momma, it's not Valentines anymore."

Today my girl was happy.

Today we put our heart activity all around the house.

We talked about sorting our colors and then graphed them together.

Today we got out our candy hearts, stickers, and Valentines.

And today we had our preschool Valentines party.

"Momma, it's not Valentines anymore. But that's okay. Thanks momma for my preschool Valentines party. I yuved it."

A Monster

"Mooooooooooooooooom!"

I hear this blood curdling scream this morning from her room and I rush to see what's the matter. I'm sure she's twisted her ankle walking around in those new red heels, that she bought with her own money because I refused to buy them. Or stubbed her toe, or sliced her finger off. Something major had to have happened with that sort of scream for sure.

"What's going on babe? Are you okay?"

"No Mom. I'm not okay. I just don't know what to do. Should I wear my socks up or socks down?"

I've created a monster.

New Hair

The whole time she didn't speak.

She just combed my hair.

Pulled it a few times.

Repositioned my head the way she wanted it to be.

Turned me this way.

Then, that way.

Always trying to be gentle and careful.

She had a vision in mind from the beginning and was determined to see it through.

And at the end she smiled.

So did I.
